Halna was finishing up with what should have been her last patient of the day, when Dr. Sholden rushed in, several medics and a medlifter in tow.
"Halna! Kreth, am I glad you're still here!" he said, "This guy's been shot in the shoulder. It shattered his collarbone. Critical condition."
Before she could manage to get out "I was just leaving," he handed her a pair of gloves.
"Get us some light," she motioned to the medics who hurried to do her bidding.

Senator Lavinia Wren strode purposefully after the medlifter, despite the efforts of several medics to keep her away. She was in a towering fury after the accident, whether or not it had been planned or directed at her. "Doctor?" she asked crisply, brilliant turquoise coat billowing behind her. "This man is my bodyguard. I know his parents. Please, do your best to make sure that he sees them again."

"That's why we're here, honey. What, do you think we use bleeding bodies to warm ourselves?" Halna replied sarcastically, not once ever even looking up.
One of the medics looked up at her. "Say, I've heard it said that doctors do that on the battlefield when it gets real cold."
Halna silenced him with a glare, her bedside manner returning. "I'm sorry, miss. I've had a long day. Can one of these shmucks help you?"
The medics all chorused in with a "Hey!"

Lavinia glared about her at the raucus medics, settling her gaze on the reddish-haired woman. "I take it that you are in charge. I would appreciate it if one of your-" She paused, searching for the right word, "-people would show me to somewhere I can contact the authorities and wait while you treat Ailil."

Halna gestured to Dr. Sholden. "Actually, he's in charge." She turned to the medic on her right. "Take her to a holoprojector."

Lavinia nodded curtly to the man the woman had indicated. "I leave Ailil in your able hands, then." She followed the medic from the room.

Halna returned her attention to the bleeding man before her.
"Get a clamp on the entrance wound. You may need to completely replace the collarbone," Dr. Sholden said as he removed his coat and mask.
"Wait a second! Where in force do you think you're going?!?!" Halna stared at him.
"Home. What, you thought I was doing this surgery?" he laughed, "Nah. You can handle it. You're a big girl, Halna." He smiled and shook his head as he walked out the door.
"But... Wha..." She stomped her foot on the ground and glared at the snickering medics. "Well, come on. Get a clamp on it. And you better cancel all your dinner plans. We're gonna be here a while."
...
THREE HOURS LATER
Halna removed her gloves and threw them in the trash. Her mask came down around her neck as she stumbled out into the waiting room. She was surprised to find the woman she had talked to before just barely still awake in a chair.

Lavinia blinked rapidly, shaking her head. She had almost dozed off, but here was the copper-haired woman she had spoken to earlier. She stood, brushing the wrinkles from her long tunic. "Ah, doctor? I would like to apologize for my earlier rudeness and introduce myself. Senator Lavinia Durada-Vashte Wren, of Cularin. How is Ailil, if you do not mind me asking? I assume that you are finished with the surgery."

Halna smiled wryly and extended her hand. "No doctors are quite insane enough to be out of bed this late. I'm Nurse Louvellu. It's a pleasure to meet you, Senator. Your friend will be fine; the surgery went very well. It may be a few weeks before he's fully recovered though." Halna shrugged lightly. "That's a rough estimate. Healing time depends greatly on the being themselves. Some people just heal quicker than others. As for you being rude, I'm afraid I was bit... quick myself. I am sorry."

Lavinia took her hand and shook it warmly. "The pleasure is mine, Nurse Louvellu. I thank you for your hard work and time. I assume he will need to stay in the hospital for some time, but may I see him now or is he resting?"

"He's probably a little groggy, but you can see him. Follow me." She gestured toward a hallway. "His room's this way."
OOC: Since we aren't in the ER anymore, I'm going to make a new thread for Ailil's room. I guess we can continue there. Sound good? (PM me.)
